Tips for great cross-country skiing ⛷

The winter season is finally around the corner – and with it comes cross-country skiing! Take the chance to explore beautiful surroundings along the ski trails and treat yourself to a few relaxing days at one of our destinations open for winter stays. Because yes, camping in winter is absolutely possible! Whether you prefer a cabin or your own camper, the choice is yours. Here you’ll find all the tips you need!


1. Boden

In Boden, the winter season is long – and so is the ski season! From our destination Björknäs – Boden it’s only about 10 meters (!!) to the nearest cross-country trail, called Paglaspåren. Here you can choose between several routes of up to 15 km, and all the tracks are illuminated. Perfect for both beginners and more experienced skiers. About 30 minutes outside Boden, you’ll also find Storklinten, a very popular spot offering fantastic skiing surrounded by beautiful northern Swedish nature in the mountains. We promise – the views from up here are breathtaking, and along the trails you can take a cozy break by one of the fireplaces.

2. Luleå

If you prefer well-prepared ski trails in several different lengths, pack your gear and head to Luleå! At Ormberget, the most popular and largest ski facility in Luleå, you’ll find tracks for everyone – from beginners and leisure skiers to professionals. With multiple trails up to 10 km, warming huts, waxing rooms, and great parking options, it’s the perfect place for a wonderful day out in northern nature. If you’re looking for a place to stay in Luleå, we recommend our cozy destination Arcus – Luleå, located about 20 minutes from Ormberget, offering a magical view over the Lule River.

3. Lycksele

Another northern gem that offers fantastic cross-country skiing! A great tip is to explore the Ume River, which transforms into Arenaälven during the winter. Here you’ll find plenty of fun winter activities – and cross-country skiing is definitely one of them. Why not combine a ski trip along beautiful trails with some ice fishing and a cozy break at one of the wind shelters or fire pits along the river? For those looking for a comfortable stay right next to Arenaälven, we recommend Ansia – Lycksele. From the destination, you’ll have a lovely view of the river, and you can enjoy cozy accommodation, a nice restaurant, or end your day with a relaxing moment in the warm spa area. Wonderful!

4. Umeå

In Umeå, you’ll find the Nydala ski trails, a popular spot for both classic cross-country and skate skiing. The artificial snow trails are located right by Lake Nydala, where you can enjoy fantastic skiing surrounded by beautiful nature and peaceful scenery. If you’re staying at our destination Nydala – Umeå you can start your ski trip quite literally right outside your door – perfect for anyone who wants easy access to the trails any time of day! The rest of Umeå also offers plenty of cross-country tracks, many of which are illuminated as the evenings grow darker.

5. Mora

Love the Vasaloppet? Then a visit to Mora is a must! The town is famous for its ski trails and charming Dalarna culture. You can train for the Vasaloppet or simply enjoy the magical ski tracks stretching for miles from the Vasaloppet Arena. Hemus Ski Stadium is another great option, offering both short and long trails suitable for everyone – from casual skiers to competitors. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to stay right in the middle of the Vasaloppet Arena? At Moraparken – Dalarna you can do just that! The popular ski trails literally start right outside your door, and the destination is beautifully located by the Österdalälven River with stunning views all around.

6. Orsa

In Orsa, the cross-country skiing season is in full swing from November all the way through March. Enjoy fantastic ski trails in Orsa Grönklitt, which is actually known for having Sweden’s best cross-country tracks of the highest quality. Here you’ll find a total of 130 km of ski trails surrounded by stunning Dalarna scenery, beautiful nature, and untouched wilderness. We promise – the views here are truly unforgettable! In the center of Orsa, about 20 minutes from Orsa Grönklitt, you’ll find our destination Orsa – Dalarna, a popular spot all year round. Here you can stay in cozy cabins or on spacious camping pitches right next to the peaceful Lake Orsa. Orsa truly offers exciting experiences from morning till night!

7. Rättvik

Experience wonderful ski trails through forests, wilderness, and open landscapes. Rättvik offers cross-country skiing in a variety of settings and lengths! Head to the Järla-area, one of Rättvik’s most popular spots for cross-country skiing. Here you’ll find illuminated trails, day tracks, and artificial snow trails suitable for all types of skiers. Another great tip is Tammeråsen, where the trails wind through beautiful nature and traditional mountain pastures – a true Dalarna dream, if you ask us! If you’re looking for accommodation, First Camp Enåbadet – Rättvik is open all year round. It’s a cozy destination where the river Enån flows around the entire area, creating a calm and relaxing atmosphere.

8. Falun

Right next to our destination Lugnet – Falun, you’ll find the popular World Championship Arena, offering fantastic ski trails of international standard. Here you can enjoy excellent tracks suitable for everyone – from beginners and leisure skiers to elite athletes, whether you prefer freestyle or classic skiing. At the destination, you can also rent cross-country skis, boots, and poles, making it perfect if you don’t want to bring your own gear and prefer accommodation close to the trails. Falun also has several other popular ski trails, starting from places like Bjursås SkiCenter, Sörskog, and even the UNESCO World Heritage Site Falu Mine.

9. Borlänge

Right next to our destination Mellsta – Borlänge, you’ll find Mellstaparken, which transforms into a true winter wonderland during the colder months. It’s a dream spot for anyone who loves cross-country skiing surrounded by peaceful nature and stunning views of the Dalälven River. Here you’ll find trails ranging from 2.5 km to 7.5 km, suitable for all types of skiers. Bring your family or training buddy and enjoy everything Borlänge has to offer. One thing you definitely won’t be disappointed by is the breathtaking scenery surrounding both the ski trails and our destination.

10. Tidaholm

If you’re looking for an active holiday close to nature, Tidaholm is always a safe bet. Many associate Tidaholm and Hökensås with fishing and beautiful nature – and that’s certainly true – but the area also offers excellent cross-country skiing during the winter season. Right next to our destination Hökensås – Tidaholm you’ll find both illuminated trails and exercise tracks up to 10 km long. The trails are clearly marked with colors, making it easy to find your way and choose the right route. And if the Swedish winter doesn’t deliver quite enough snow, snow cannons are there to help ensure the best skiing conditions possible! 

11. Karlstad

Karlstad might not be the first city that comes to mind when you think of cross-country skiing, but the truth is that there are plenty of great opportunities for a wonderful day out on the trails. Why not enjoy the beautiful nature and ski tracks around Kronoparken or the Skutberget Nature Reserve? These trails are fairly easy and perfect for beginners or recreational skiers. All around Karlstad, you’ll also find several other ski trails maintained by the municipality and local sports clubs. A great tip is to stay at First Camp Skutberget – Karlstad or Mörudden – Hammarsö, giving you easy access to several nearby ski trails – yay!

12. Örebro

Put on your skis, pack a lunch, and take a trip around Lake Ånnaboda – a pleasant 2.5 km route offering beautiful scenery and peaceful nature. We promise, you won’t be disappointed! Around our destination Ånnaboda – Örebro there are several ski trails – up to 70 km in total! If you’d rather not bring all your ski gear, you can rent equipment directly at the destination. Enjoy a comfortable stay with everything you need – and with ski trails and winter adventures right outside your door!

13. Hallingdal (Norge)

Hallingdal is perfect for cross-country skiing, offering over 320 km of well-groomed trails suitable for both beginners and experienced skiers. The trails run through stunning landscapes – from forest terrain to open mountain plateaus – and are connected to the larger Hallingdal trail network. Winter in Hallingdal is snow-sure, and the trail teams make sure there are both classic and skate tracks available from late October to mid-May. Skaraåsen/Skagahøgdi is another fantastic area, just a scenic drive from our destination Gol – Hallingdal, as is Nystølfjellet, which features 60 km of trails connected to the Golsfjellet network.

12. Telemark (Norge)

Our destination Bø – Telemark is located right at the foot of Lifjell, making it an excellent starting point for cross-country skiing with well-prepared trails. Here you’ll find everything from family-friendly routes to more challenging tracks – all surrounded by spectacular scenery, beautiful snow-covered forests, and the magical winter landscape of the mountains. It takes just 10 minutes by car from the campsite to reach Lifjell’s 80 km of ski trails. You don’t even need a car to hit the tracks from the campsite – simply strap on your skis and explore the forest terrain right behind the site!
