Discover the beautiful nature of Öland
Beautiful hiking trails, peaceful forests, unique limestone landscapes and wonderful coastal views – Öland is full of nature waiting to be explored. Around Ekerum, you are close to both the sea and some of the island’s most fascinating natural areas, making it easy to head out for a walk, a run or a full day of exploring.
Here are some of our favourite nature experiences and hiking trails to discover while staying at our campsite on Öland.
Hiking and running around Ekerum
The area around Ekerum is ideal for both hiking and running. Follow the coastal path towards Stora Rör and enjoy beautiful views of the Kalmar Strait, or explore the nearby Halltorps hage Nature Reserve.
Halltorps hage is located right next to the campsite and is known for its ancient oak trees, rich wildlife and beautiful woodland. The winding paths make it a great choice for a peaceful walk surrounded by nature.
If you want to explore more of Öland on foot, there are plenty of other beautiful nature areas and hiking trails within reach.
Rönnerum–Abbantorp
Rönnerum–Abbantorp lies in the heart of Öland’s Mittlandsskogen, one of Northern Europe’s largest continuous deciduous forest areas. The landscape is varied, with broadleaf forests, grazed meadows, wetlands and open grasslands.
The area is also home to Rönnerums fornby, an ancient settlement where traces of houses and stone walls offer a fascinating glimpse into life on Öland during the Iron Age. Combining beautiful nature with cultural history, Rönnerum–Abbantorp is a rewarding place to explore on foot.
Karum
Karum is a unique agricultural landscape where centuries of human activity have left their mark on the surroundings. Here you can discover traces from several historical periods, stretching all the way back to the Iron Age.
One of the best-known sights is Noaks ark – “Noah’s Ark” – an impressive ancient stone ship setting on Karums alvar. Surrounded by open countryside, pastures and traditional farmland, Karum is a wonderful destination for anyone interested in both nature and Öland’s history.
Eketorpsleden hiking trail
Eketorpsleden is a 1.6-kilometre hiking trail across the open alvar landscape west of Eketorp Fortress in southern Öland. The relatively short trail makes it an easy addition to a day of exploring this part of the island.
The surroundings are characterised by the distinctive limestone landscape for which southern Öland is famous. Combine your walk with a visit to Eketorp Fortress, the southernmost of Öland’s ancient ringforts, for a day filled with both nature and history.
