Day Trips and Attractions in Åhus and Kristianstad

Åhus – Medieval Charm by the Sea

Head into Åhus and wander along cobbled streets lined with half-timbered houses and historic buildings. Åhus is one of Sweden’s best-preserved medieval towns, with a charming town centre just a stone’s throw from the sea. Around the main square and harbour, you’ll find plenty of lovely spots to stop for an ice cream, a Swedish fika or a relaxing holiday dinner.

Kristianstad’s Vattenrike & Naturum Visitor Centre

Right in the heart of Kristianstad, you’ll find Naturum Vattenriket, the gateway to the wildlife-rich Kristianstad Vattenrike Biosphere Reserve. Start by exploring the exhibition, discover what’s happening beneath the water’s surface, then head outside along the boardwalks and nature trails through the wetlands. A wonderful day out for nature lovers of all ages!

Äspet Nature Reserve

Just south of Åhus, Äspet Nature Reserve offers beautiful coastal scenery, lagoons and an abundance of birdlife. Bring your binoculars and follow the marked trail to the birdwatching tower for lovely views across the area. Please note that access to large parts of the beach and lagoon area is restricted from 15 March to 30 September to protect wildlife.

Absolut Home

Åhus is the birthplace of one of Sweden’s most famous exports. At Absolut Home, you can discover the fascinating story of Absolut, L.O. Smith and how vodka from Åhus became a world-famous brand. Aosehus Castle Ruins & Åhus Harbour

At the mouth of the Helge River, you’ll find the remains of the medieval Aosehus Castle, one of the visitor sites in the Vattenrike Biosphere Reserve. Built in the 12th century in a strategic location for trade and defence, the castle was destroyed in the 16th century. Why not combine your visit with a stroll along the harbour and a bite to eat?

Forsakar and Degeberga Hills

Escape into nature with a trip to Forsakar and Degeberga, where beech forests, streams and rolling hills create some of the area's most beautiful hiking scenery. At Forsakar, you can admire the waterfall from the trail above the ravine. For your safety, avoid entering the ravine itself and stick to the red-marked trail along its edges.

Kivik – The Heart of Apple Country

Kivik lies at the heart of Skåne’s famous apple-growing region and makes a fantastic day trip for food lovers and families alike. Visit Kiviks Musteri and Äpplets Hus (the House of Apples), take a stroll around the harbour and treat yourself to delicious local apple products. The area is especially beautiful in late summer and autumn, but Kivik is well worth a visit throughout the holiday season.

Kristianstad

Spend a day exploring Kristianstad, where shopping and restaurants meet culture, history and beautiful green spaces. Wander through the town centre before heading to Tivoliparken and Naturum Vattenriket – here, city life and nature are never far apart. Don't miss the chance to discover the city's charming shops, cosy cafés, popular local attractions and historic surroundings.

Åhus Museum & the Medieval Town

Located on Stora Torg, Åhus Museum is housed in the town’s medieval town hall. Its local history exhibition brings old Åhus to life through fascinating archaeological finds. The museum opens seasonally and is closed for the remainder of 2026, with plans to reopen in summer 2027. In the meantime, you can still explore the historic surroundings of the square, church, monastery ruins and medieval town wall all year round.

Wanås Konst – Art in the Forest

At Wanås Konst, art and nature come together in a stunning sculpture park nestled among Skåne’s beech forests. The whole family can set off on an adventure to discover nearly 80 permanent artworks, along with exciting temporary exhibitions along the way. Allow a few hours to explore the grounds and enjoy the experience at your own pace.
