Mjølkevegen – A Scenic Bike Route from Vinstra to Gol

Dreaming of a cycling holiday through spectacular landscapes—mountains, summer farms, and vibrant cultural scenery? Then Mjølkevegen is calling your name! Directly translated to "The Milky Way", this scenic route stretches from Vinstra in Gudbrandsdalen, winding through the heart of Valdres, all the way to Gol in Hallingdal.

From mountain peaks to charming farmsteads, it’s one of Norway’s most beautiful cycling routes!

Covering around 250 km, Mjølkevegen is part of National Cycle Route 5. It mainly follows gravel roads with little traffic and is well signposted in both directions. Along the way, you’ll pass through some of Norway’s most active summer farming areas—like Jotunheimvegen in the east and Stølsvidda in the west—offering panoramic views, fresh mountain air, and plenty of chances to connect with nature.

Not up for the full route? No problem! There are lots of shorter stages and loop options perfect for families, beginners, and seasoned cyclists alike. Try easygoing rides between Vaset and Golsfjellet, or challenge yourself on steeper sections like Slettefjellet or the climb up to Ryfoss.

E-bikes, bike trailers, and adapted tours

Mjølkevegen is well-suited for e-bikes, though some longer climbs require planning for charging. Bike trailers can also be used, but a few parts may need alternative routes or walking the bike.

Mjølkevegen etiquette

This is living summer farm country, with grazing cows, sheep, and goats. Please respect wildlife and locals: keep your distance from animals, take your trash with you, and use designated toilet facilities. Mjølkevegen offers unforgettable experiences in fragile nature—let’s help keep it that way for everyone.
