At our destinations, dogs are always welcome! Taking your dog on vacation is becoming more popular, and according to a survey by Doggy, 8 out of 10 dog owners want to bring their furry friend along for summer adventures. While all our campsites are dog-friendly, planning your trip carefully will ensure a great experience for both you and your pup. We’ve gathered everything you need to know for a successful dog-friendly vacation!
Plan Ahead
Prepare for your trip by researching dog-friendly parks, beaches, restaurants, and accommodations. There are many online resources, such as dog-friendly travel websites and Facebook groups, where you can find recommendations. Looking for the perfect spot? Check out our best dog-friendly campsites.
Choose a Dog-Friendly Destination
A relaxing week at a dog-friendly campsite or summer cabin with the whole family is a dream for any dog! When planning your trip, keep your dog in mind to ensure an enjoyable vacation for everyone. At First Camp, all destinations welcome dogs, and many even offer dog showers, dog play areas, and dog-friendly beaches nearby.
Travel Safely
Whether traveling by car or RV, make sure your dog is secure in a travel crate or pet seatbelt. Some of our nature-close campsites require driving on bumpy roads, so a spill-proof water bowl is great for keeping your dog hydrated without mess. Remember to take regular breaks so your pup can stretch its legs!
Be Aware of Heat
Dogs can overheat quickly, so never leave your dog alone in a car, camper, or RV, as they heat up fast. Always ensure plenty of shade and water to keep your pup cool.
Keep Your Dog Hydrated
Some dogs don’t drink enough water in warm weather. Wet dog food can help increase their hydration, and for extra hot days, try freezing dog food into small cubes to serve as a cooling treat.
Enjoy Quality Time Together
Take a real break! Swap your home office or busy work schedule for open fields, forests, and endless beaches. Disconnect from emails and social media and take your dog on short walks or long outdoor adventures—great for both of you!
Keep Your Dog Active
Bored dogs tend to bark more and become restless. Balance training, swimming, scent games, or classic fetch are great ways to keep your dog entertained. Remember, heat makes dogs tired, so plan long walks, jogs, or bike rides in the morning or evening when it's cooler.
Refreshing Swims
Want your dog to cool off? Look for dog-friendly beaches and watch out for toxic algae, as some can be dangerous. A life jacket and floating toys can make swimming even more fun. After swimming, dry your dog properly to prevent moisture-related skin issues. Check out our dog-friendly campsites near beaches!
Be Prepared for Emergencies
While traveling, lost dogs may struggle to find their way home. In Sweden, all our dogs must be microchipped and registered, making reunions easier. It’s a good idea to save the contact details of a local vet before your trip—just a few seconds of planning could save your dog’s life.
Home is Where the Heart Is
At our dog-friendly campsites, your pup is always welcome! However, if you plan activities that may stress your dog or are not pet-friendly, consider whether your dog might be happier at home. Sometimes, a stay with family, friends, or a dog boarding facility is the best option.
