Sustainability at First Camp – Biodiversity

We Promote Biodiversity 💚

To preserve and protect the local ecosystems surrounding our destinations, working with biodiversity is important to us. By supporting a rich variety of plants, animals, and microorganisms, we help maintain a balanced and sustainable ecosystem – which benefits nature, our guests, and everyone living nearby. This also enhances the experience for our guests, as being close to nature and enjoying the outdoors is a big part of the camping lifestyle for many.

Actively promoting biodiversity also reduces the risk of environmental damage and long-term harm to local nature, which is a key part of our long-term sustainability efforts. In other words, we don’t just love our two-legged guests – we welcome those who buzz, chirp, and crawl too. Because when you’re big, you have to be kind – especially to nature’s smallest heroes.

What Are We Doing to Promote Biodiversity?

To protect, support, and enhance biodiversity, we have taken measures that benefit the ecosystems in and around the green areas at our destinations.

Summer 2025 – Saving the Bees 🐝

This summer, we’re focusing on helping our buzzing friends by installing bee hotels and planting bee-friendly flowers at our destinations. “Save the Bees” is an initiative from the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation (Naturskyddsföreningen). Here’s what they say on their website:

“Save the Bees is an initiative by the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation aimed at raising awareness about the critical situation of bees and the threat to biodiversity. The situation for wild bees and other pollinators is urgent. In Sweden, one-third of our 270 wild bee species are at risk of disappearing. Food scarcity, pesticides, and climate change threaten these wild gardeners. We all depend on bees and other insects for their vital work. About one-third of the food we eat is pollinated by them.”

Flora and Fauna in Green Areas 🌻

We have chosen to include plant and animal species in our green areas that support pollinators. By planting flowering plants and creating habitats for insects, such as bees and butterflies, we help preserve these essential pollinators.

Active Efforts to Eliminate Invasive Species 🌱

Invasive alien species often displace native species by competing for resources like food and habitat, making it difficult for native species to survive. These invasive species can also introduce new diseases or parasites to which native species have no immunity, further threatening their existence. That’s why we actively work to eliminate invasive species in our green areas.

Organic and Natural Pest Control and Fertilizers 🌍

We do not use chemical pesticides or fertilizers in order to protect the environment and avoid harmful effects on soil, water, and biodiversity. By choosing organic and natural alternatives, we reduce the risk of long-term damage to ecosystems and wildlife.

Sustainably Managed Land 🏕️

The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aim to promote a better future for both people and the planet. Goal 15 specifically focuses on protecting ecosystems and biodiversity – from forests and land to wildlife and plant life. As part of our environmental responsibility, we measure the share of land managed sustainably within our operations. This is calculated by summing the total area of our destinations that were certified by Green Key (an international eco-label for tourism businesses) at the end of 2024.

Straight from Our Destinations

Our destinations are spread across Scandinavia – from Boden in the north to Gol in Norway’s west and Frigård in the southernmost corner of Denmark. Each one is unique, but they all have one thing in common: a close connection to nature. Here are a few examples of how we work with sustainability at our destinations.

City - Strömstad

In Strömstad, the campsite is decorated with insect hotels and birdhouses, supporting one of our environmental goals: to promote biodiversity. There are also three small flower meadows on site, where insects, birds, and bees thrive. “And they’re lovely for our guests to enjoy as well,” says Anna, Destination Manager.

Enåbadet - Rättvik

At Enåbadet in Rättvik, they’ve combined the best of both worlds – reuse and biodiversity! Janitor Jocke crafted beautiful new birdhouses and insect hotels from old pallets, which now decorate the area and bring camping joy to our chirping and buzzing guests.
