Telemarkskanalen, often called “the world’s eighth wonder,” is a 105-kilometer waterway connecting Skien to Dalen through 18 impressive locks. Originally built for transporting timber and goods, the canal is now a paradise for boating enthusiasts, nature lovers, and adventure seekers.
The boats M/S Victoria and M/S Henrik Ibsen operate one daily departure up or down Telemarkskanalen from mid-May to September/October. They meet just 200 meters above Lunde Lock, right next to First Camp Lunde – Telemark. This is the only place along the canal where two canal boats cross paths — every day at 13:10.
🚴🏻♀️🚣🏻 Transport with the canal boats
The canal boats can transport canoes, kayaks, and bicycles to and from all regular stops along the route. You don’t need to be on board yourself, though it’s certainly worth the experience if you have the chance. You must book a ticket for your canoe/kayak — and for yourself if you wish — for the stretch you plan to travel on Telemarkskanalen.
You can find prices and timetables here.
Lunde Slusekro is the closest restaurant to First Camp Lunde – Telemark, just 300–400 meters away. How about enjoying lunch here while watching the canal boats cross each other? You can view their menu here. Opening hours follow the canal season, with selected weekends in spring and autumn.
