Sustainability at First Camp – Social Sustainability

Our Commitment to Social Sustainability

Social sustainability is a core part of our business, and for us, it’s about creating a fair and inclusive environment for everyone. This means ensuring that all employees, our guests, and our suppliers and partners are always treated with respect and dignity. By embracing social sustainability in all of these relationships, we contribute to a more just and sustainable future for all. Together, we can make a difference!

🙏 We Deliver Results

From Summer Job to a Career in Camping

Summer is a particularly important season for us. That’s when we roll up our sleeves and strengthen our team with a dedicated group of seasonal employees. Every year, we welcome hundreds of summer workers who help create memorable experiences for our guests. Our seasonal staff are an invaluable part of the team, and during these busy weeks, we nearly double our workforce. That’s why a good introduction, clear training, and the right support are crucial to help them get up to speed quickly – especially since, for many, this is their first step into working life.

Equally important are our year-round employees, many of whom take on leadership roles and guide the way during our most action-packed days. We focus on training, involvement, and creating the right conditions for everyone to thrive and grow in their role. Several of our leaders and managers started out as seasonal workers themselves and have over time taken on greater responsibilities.

How We Work with Social Sustainability at First Camp

We Measure, Listen, and Act

To ensure we are on the right path and focusing on what truly matters:

  • Every year, we conduct a comprehensive employee survey to gather insights on experiences, needs, and ideas.
  • In addition to the annual survey, we send out short, focused pulse surveys every week. These give us valuable real-time data on how our teams are doing. By tracking trends and quickly identifying signals, we can act immediately, highlight best practices, and identify areas for improvement.
  • All employees have the opportunity to evaluate First Camp’s sustainability efforts.
  • Our guests are invited to evaluate their stay and share their impressions of our sustainability work.
  • We monitor employee absenteeism as part of our commitment to a sustainable work environment. Sick leave gives us an important indication of our teams’ physical and mental well-being.

Competency-Based Recruitment

We actively apply competency-based recruitment. By focusing on skills and experience, we reduce the risk of discrimination in the hiring process, ensuring a fairer assessment for all candidates.

Health and Well-being

We are committed to improving health and well-being and to developing a positive environment for both employees and guests. That’s why both guest and staff areas are smoke-free.

All guest areas are smoke-free to create a healthy and pleasant environment for all visitors. This also reduces fire risks and protects the well-being of both guests and staff. First Camp is also a smoke-free workplace to promote a healthy work environment and protect all employees from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke.

Information and Encouragement for Sustainability Initiatives

We keep our guests informed about our sustainability initiatives to raise awareness and inspire engagement in important environmental issues. By encouraging our guests to take part, we can together reduce our environmental impact. By also educating all employees in our sustainability initiatives, we ensure that everyone can clearly and confidently communicate our commitment to sustainability to our guests.

  • Employees receive basic sustainability training upon hiring, and additional training as needed.
  • Employees are trained annually on sustainability topics.

Promoting Eco-Friendly Transport

We inform and encourage our guests to use eco-friendly modes of transport to reduce carbon emissions and contribute to more sustainable travel. We also aim to raise awareness about how transportation choices affect the local environment and ecosystems. Examples of eco-friendly transport include public transport (bus, train, etc.), carpooling, electric vehicles, and bicycles.

  • Upon check-in, our guests receive information about the nearest bus and train stations.
  • Many destinations offer bike rentals so guests can explore the local area in a simple, fun, and environmentally friendly way.
  • Destinations that do not offer bike rentals can provide information about the nearest rental services.

Environmental and Social Activities for Community Development

By engaging with local communities, First Camp supports positive change and raises awareness of important environmental and social issues. These activities also give our employees and guests the opportunity to take part in meaningful initiatives that make a difference.

Examples of environmental activities in our kids’ club:

  • Yessi Teaches Us About Recycling – fun games and competitions like “Yessi’s Recycle Champs”, including sorting races.
  • Environmental/Nature Art – we collect litter from nature and create a shared artwork.

Examples of First Camp’s social activities:

  • From 2022 to 2024, we have collected recycling deposits (pant) at around 50 of our Swedish destinations, with all proceeds donated directly to Plan International and their work to end hunger. Together with our guests, First Camp has donated over SEK 1.8 million.

Sustainability in Collaboration with Our Suppliers

We carefully select our partners, including our suppliers. They are informed about our sustainability work and encouraged to engage in sustainability efforts. We have developed a Code of Conduct for business partners based on the UN Global Compact. The primary aim of the UN Global Compact is to encourage companies to adopt sustainable and socially responsible business practices by adhering to ten principles related to human rights, labour standards, the environment, and anti-corruption.

Responsible Collaboration in Our Facilities

In cases where external companies operate within First Camp’s facilities, they are informed about our sustainability efforts to ensure that our values and goals are reflected in their operations. We encourage them to actively engage in sustainability issues and integrate sustainable practices into their own processes. By collaborating in this way, we aim to create a unified and sustainable working environment for everyone.

Making Sustainable Holidays Easy

Together, we can make the biggest difference! That’s why we always aim to inform and inspire our guests on how to make smart choices – for both the environment and the people around us.

Suppliers & Partnerships

One of the benefits of being a large chain is that we can work with strong and reliable suppliers. We carefully select our partners and actively seek those who share our view on sustainability.
